Halloween, Florida, and Stories and Poems

I feel sorry the poetry contest moved offline here at Zorpia. So here's another take on tropical halloween:

Alligator Boots

Don't touch me, my body is thorny,

armored and scaly, mouth gaping,

I growl, menacingly, lurch forward

hungry to bring you to swamp,

the thing in the soup, the gravel slip of boot

and you're down and everyone

on top, wanting all the candy of life,

to feed on, but don't want to pay the price

of homage to the ancient, the survivors, the primitive

parts of our mind that want to run

loose.

Sheri Fresonke Harper

Happy Halloween All!

Meanwhile, I've written two Halloween poems (I get paid by the hit if you click the link, just telling you to be forewarned, and it won't cost you anything but your time):

Halloween Hunt Haiku

and

Facing All Hallows Eve

and a Halloween Story:

Hungry for You

and found out my short story "Essin and the Summer of Secrets" will be out in Chimera World 6, New World Disorder by Halloween, it costs and if you're interested send me mail with the title, I can get you a lower priced copy.

Happy Song Poem

The happy song I sing,

comes from someplace deep inside of me,

I hum ditties,

ring a ding flitties

for no reason at all,

no recall just the sprig, sprig sprou-ou-out of sprinkler

washing world weariness washing gray-eh-ay away.

Happiness, I spread wide in aria flung,

song sparrow whistling, fitzing, sprawling,

flounderiing on grass,

rolling down hills,

eating marshmallow clouds

unbidden unbound, that's true happiness I've found

not the gold of love, not the silver of hold,

not the blaze of passion or greening

sweet of clover freedom and being

happiness is all sprung like a waterfall

each being freed

to dance and spread-eh-ed,

to the stars electron unbound,

that's happiest me going wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

are you with me?

Messenger Testing

Once when we were first married, we found a Mayan Temple and lost the crowd while kissing too much. So we asked, which way to go? from a Mayan worker resting in the shade. He pointed off to one direction. So holding hands, we rushed off, laughing, rapidly through the trees, looking for our tour, and finding others, here, there, everywhere, but not what we were looking for, the climb to the top. Eventually, we came to the tour group in the parking lot, not ours, but to the messenger, I guess we all look the same. We laughed and dashed back the other way.

So later in life, when I wandered into a new world, I met a merry bunch of messengers and we all laughed and they poked and prodded and directed and lead me every which way. I got hurt because I painted a picture they decided was real, without looking. I found my way blocked and got angry because the road was not leveled the same. And we spoke different languages. Scales were set in different measures. Judgements were made based on red tape instead of heart. My messengers were surprised because they gave good directions, for someone going the wrong way and I got angry because of their lack of sight.

I realize now I was with messengers who couldn't see any difference from one to the other and yet, I am not the same, nor are the others. I suspect I am deserting them. I do not want to. They are such a merry bunch and a great deal of fun. But after having shared my heart, they still don't know me. No decisions, just a thought.

So then, later today, I get my June horoscope and it says I make the decision to go off on my own and pursue and artistic project, hmm, it would be about time, I would say. lol

Meanwhile, I'm truly exhausted.

Did I Create

Oh, no, I didn't create, instead I aged,

The silver in my hair, declaimed my place,

duty is yours to give to the kids,

who need to be petted and feted and paid.

.

No song in your heart is every allowed

when the time comes for you to be proud

accomplish all you must by fifty you're told

because after that, duty is owed.

.

Give to the poor, give to the needy,

give to the dying and all of the greedy,

give to hungry, give to the world,

they take all that you have and leave you dirt.

.

This clay that I have, deep in my mind,

lines the well of my soul but am never allowed time

when do I have to listen to time's cloak

when hurry and rush and spit out like a chime

.

is demanded by youth begging for kisses,

like the demand of babies, please give me kisses,

and all the wonder of the universe is on hold,

because I am too old to be allowed what I need.

Ever too patient, Sheri

The Promise of Stagnation and Freedom

The war of self fighting self, Egyptian artwork,

face to face in mirror while stance mid-kata,

how it always seems to hold mid whirl

as if the pleasure is all pirouette, all toe.

.

Would you know it thus, to always wonder

what my other self has in line with thought,

to think that I have gifted guilt not meant

undesired as if friendship is more than the calling.

.

Cloudy confusion is a seabed of mind

I swim past each idea, put it on like new dress,

new hair, new heart, new touch, such a fool

I have leapt out into new not knowing the path.

.

Such a fool to not care, deadened from total loss,

there is nothing built within me to hang on to,

just my angel's hand gripping me as if I had no weight

and I have none, having lost everything to me.

.

And yet I don't even remember what it was I lost.

Lost ideal? Lost surface? Lost interplanetary spline?

A wave like antennae and I am off scattering the bling

like blasted ions, who cares anyway except the ride?

.

I had just hoped for your laughter along with me

all the way. Feel the breeze. I'm away.

New Love Poem--Haven't written one for a while

Go Slowly But Don't Leave

It is an act of disbelief to imagine myself alone

cold, no arms around.

It is an act of hope that sunshine explodes

warm, loving, impossibly gold.

I have wobbled on my axis, been spun near to my core,

meltdown, tidal wave, folding layers, twisting under forces

outside my control,

and you disbelieving,

left me on my own, after promise of heart.

I don't stop and start like a street car, once given,

love is forever, however cold.

I couldn't wish to see the pit your death would bring me,

don't answer, hush.

Somewhere inside you lie, like I do, believe distance

can separate. I'm in limbo.

All the forces of heaven and hell are fighting like radiation,

give and take of an electron here and there and all the while

I am broken in the center.

I can't let you go. I can't wish you dead.

I am in limbo.

Reach, gently, one word, one touch,

one kindness, lead me step by step

toward the truth of you

however shattered

love may fix

until one day soon,

I am real again in your arms.

National Poetry Month -- Mind Games

I'm taking part in helping celebrate National Poetry Month by writing a poem a day, plus some. These are some of the more fun assignments and the results, try one and see how you do:

Write a sestina-- a complicated form where you write six stanzas with all the same six end words, but each stanza has a different ordering of them. Six Stages of Becoming a Philosopher

Write a acrostic poem -- a poem where the first character spells a word horizontally. Mine used the word "double" up to a XXX then mirrored it, i.e. elbuod, and also ended the sentence with the same letters. Double Crossed Doubled

Write an addition poem -- a poem where you add a letter or a word every line. Atomic Addition

Write a poem about an object -- pretty straight forward compared to the others but you got to see the picture of the stump I used, what big lips has he. My Friendly Stump the Gabble Duck

Oh, and I finally did a audio file of one of my poems "Company Tags" from my chapbook "Decalmaker" published by Puddinghouse Press.

That's it except were doing household chores to clean up the house and sell it. I'm recovering memories with every step along the way.

So my dad passed away this past week : some poems trying to capture how I feel:

Apology and Sorrow Lead to Light

and

After My Father's Death

I see you standing up, slowing unwinding the years,

Shoulders no longer bowed beneath weight

Confused, you say, damn, what am I supposed to do now?

And I say, I’ll be home soon and will guide you away.

Inside I shake my head, you can’t believe you’re freed

Freed from providing the wall of security around us all.

Loving us means you stand up to the threat from outside

Securing us with your love, your work, your time.

Sick for so long, you can’t believe your hands are free

No knots clogging inside. Outside, so ghostly unreal,

like a memory of self when you could laugh, hug, tease.

Watching, I feel the shifting land move about begin to sway

All the dangers of life are coming, more dead and dying.

Yet, I can’t grieve at your loss, you belong to memory.

You define the domain, ideal father, father of mine.

Farmer hat on head, tilling the fields, mending the engines.

Pain no longer stains you. Weariness no longer clogs eyes.

Your father leans on his car, then hugs you back to home.

There’s grandma, there’s the family of past, gathering

Paying due, yet the light doesn’t come into your heart.

Old time father, insisting on restraint. Old time father,

grease in his hands, paint on his pants, an airplane at side.

Best friend grinning because you still haven’t caught on.

The joke is on you. You’re freed now, to be yourself anywhere,

Free of gravity, freed to laugh and laugh and tease

all the little girls of your heart, all the ones needing hugs,

all yours if you just unfurl your wings and arise.

Missing you already, Sheri

Meanwhile, my father-in-law has also been ill, we're off to Florida to see him and to visit another University. I'm supposedly studying my physics but am trying to get my computer, desk and brain clear of guilt for neglecting everyone and then paying attention like never before.

Soon, April will be here and I can settle into flowers and the rain, unless we suddenly burst into action moving.

My husband's favorite line is "I hate change. I like to inflict it on other people but not on myself." I begin to agree. Feet in the mud sounds terrific.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy New Year

We're off to Texas for a time because we're planning on moving south to get warm. Of course, this current wave of snow and ice has extended to the normally warm regions so it doesn't seem like there'd be much benefit, but as my husband says it's the increased amount of light.

Anyway, despite any cultural things, Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and all that! Let Peace Reign in Your Hearts!

I've been under the whip so to speak as I try to figure out the best place to get a Master's Degree to help my next novel, which I've laid out. The latter is easy compared to the former since its been soooo many years since I was in school formally. Anyway, that is all coming out, I guess at least I keep plugging away at it.

Blogs in work, more to follow

I've been working on a whole lot of background projects, namely my blogs. I have managed to write a few stories that are short and fun and free to read. I make money when people click on them, just so you know. If you have questions about how it works, send me an email with story in the subject.

No Matter What

No Matter What

The bell was ringing, ding, ding, urgently, swinging, braying, come home, come home, save us all, when Jared finished the last furrow. He wiped the sweat from his face, lifted the plow and carried it beneath a tree. No matter what fire was burning, good iron was sorely wasted.

His muscles shook as he stumbled into a trot, then full run. What could be the matter?

A crowd gathered round the village square when he arrived out of breath. He pushed closer, smelling the pungent tang of smoke. Fire? Mid-day? 104 out at least?

People edged away readily before his elbows. Then he saw it. A hole. The hole went clear through the pavement, down through dirt, down, down, way beyond where light would reach.

Jared grabbed his brother's shoulder. "What happened?"

"Didn't you see it? Burning ember the size of my hat came barreling down from the sky."

Jared scratched his head. "What's all the bother about? Did someone get hurt?"

His brother shrugged. Everyone looked at their neighbor, mentally counting heads. The consensus seemed to be that no one was missing.

Jared shook his head and turned away. "I don't have time for this, I have a field to plant."

"Well, someone could get hurt." Yeah, yeah, yeah went around the village.

Jared raised both hands in defeat. "Okay, we should cover the hole."

"Fill it in first, I think." Yeah, yeah, yeah went around the circle of faces so Jared agreed. "What a bunch of bother about nothing. I'll bring a load of rock in after I finish plowing." Me, too, others agreed and that finally was the end of the whole thing. Or so Jared thought.

Next day, noon, the darn bell started dinging again. Jared sighed and grabbed the wheelbarrow and pushed it before him, running at a trot. "What's happened now?"

Everyone moved aside and there, close to the previous partially filled hole, another hole smoked its last tendrils of heat into the sky. "The God's are angry with us," an elderly woman cried, making the sign of the cross. "Fiddlesticks," a chubby man responded.

"And who are you?" Jared asked.

"I'm Professor Nudle, from the U. The Mayor asked me to take a look."

"Well, what's the matter?" Jared asked. "Why are these meteorites hitting our town."

"Technically, " Professor Nudle lifted his pants up over his belly, "no matter, or anti-matter. Nothing else would cut through the earth quite this way."

"Yeah? So what do we do about them?" Jared lifted his pants up too, and snicked his belt tight.

Professor Nudle smiled. "Good question. I'll take some samples and do a study, too, but I'm going to need grant money to cover costs."

Jared groaned, thinking, how's that going to get my fields plowed and planted. "Why? You think you'll have a solution? Someone could get hurt."

"Yeah, someone could get hurt", went around the circle and everyone handed over a $20 bill.

Jared did likewise, but decided on one more try. "Any helpful hints in the meantime?"

Professor Nudle stuffed the money into his pockets. "Well, someone ought to fill these holes in, someone could get hurt."

Jared shook his head. "You going to help with that?"

Professor Nudle lay a hand on his chest. "Who me? I don't know how to work with my hands. It's all in the head, boy."

The crowd nodded approvingly and agreed that they'd carry wheelbarrows of rock to fill in the hole after each turn in the fields. Jared sighed and thought that was the end of it.

Not so. Next day, plowing his field, here come's the bells ring-ding-dinging even more frantic than before though it was likely just his imagination. This time he just ignored it, realizing it probably meant another hole had appeared in the town square. Way he figured it, he was money ahead to just do his work and save the energy for hauling in more rock.

Sure enough, when he arrived hear nightfall, another hole speared their lovely town square and a crowd sat arguing about whether or not the God's were angry or something could be done. Shaking his head, Jared
shook his fist. "C'mon people, don't just stand here pondering why our life is being destroyed bit by bit. No matter what, the show must go on. If you don't get your fields plowed, you're going to starve just because no one can reason with the Gods."

Professor Nudle pushed himself clear of the crowd. "Say, Mr. Jared. That's a good point. Maybe we should go try. Take a bit of money..."

Jared rolled his eyes. "I suppose now you'll want me to fetch a pile of rocks to fill those darn black holes before they get here."

Professor Nudle beamed and lurched forward and back on his toes. "Now there's an idea. Great. SImply great. I'll propose it to the committee. I may just make a scientist of you, yet."

Jared dumped his load of rocks with a laugh, thinking, this can't be real. The statistical probability of any more antimatter showing up in his backyard had to be so unlikely, the whole thing would likely be over and die down.

Not so. Next day two villagers got hit by one of those black holes and the lawmakers shoved through emergency funding. And that was how Jared found himself doing a whole lot more work and becoming the nation's first astronaut. Someone had to do it and that someone was him.

SO, to make a long story short, sometime about the return trip from finding out the wonders of the universe and hauling a whole lot of rock, Jared became really wise. You know, Jared. It seems to me, the person that keeps asking all the questions, meaning you, ends up doing a whole lot of work. Maybe you should keep quiet next time. Perhaps the villagers struggling to pay off their extra taxes figured it out too. Because next time a black hole hit their town square, no one rang the bell. And that's how Jared fell into a whole lot of nothing mattering what, causing the story to end rather abruptly.

Sheri Fresonke Harper

E-Addict and Return from Peru

Well my addiction to everything on the internet went cold turkey with only spotty access to the web while I´ve been in Peru. Had a great time and took lots of pictures, will post somethings and visit everyone soon. Everytime we finally managed to get someplace low enough to breathe with ease, back again up high soon followed. I loved the flight of the Andean Condor and saw many buteos (hawks and vultures and falcons) while we were here along with about 140 other birds. Now finally, coming home to where I belong.
