I'm preparing Arabic lessons for my friend, Raheel .These lessons are for you, Raheel, and to anyone interested in learning Arabic. To Raheel>> I know it took me a year and a half to deliver my promise but better late than never, lol. It turned out that the CDs I bought for Arabic are useless. The language used in these CDs is informal Arabic (Arabic with certain accent). Although it might seem easier in pronunciation but I prefer formal Arabic clean of any informal dialect. However, since spoken Arabic is your concern then I'll concentrate on that and provide you with both formal and informal pronunciation of words.

Lesson 1:

Greetings : Al- Tah'ya:

Hello= Marhaban (formal)

You respond by saying: Ahlan wa Sahlan (can be formal and informal too)

"Ya hala" (pronunciation of Arabs of the Gulf area)

Al-Salamu Alaikum = peace be upon you ( a greeting of Muslims whether they are Arabs or not)

Kay'fa Haluk? > for a male How are you? =

= Kay'fa Haluki? > for a female

= Kay'fa Halukm? > for a group of people.

You can also say: Kay'fa al-Haal? >> for a male or femal or a group of people.

I'm fine = Ana bi- Khair .

Good morning: Sabah al-khair

Your response: Sabah Al-noor = morning of light

Arabs respond to Sabah al-khair in lots of ways depending on mood or closeness to the person:

Sabah Al-ridah (morning of satisfaction) >>that's my mom's greeting.

Sabah Al-Ward (morning of roses) Sabah al-yasameen (morning of Jasmine) >> these are ONLY for close people.

Good afternoon: Masa' Al-Khair

Good night: Tusb'ih ala Khair (formal and informal)

Excuse me: La'w Samaht > for a male

La'w Samahti> for a female

Good bye: Ma al-Salamah

Thank you: Shukran

Response: Afwan ( you're welcome)

That's the first lesson and there will be more to come in sha Allah ( God willing).

"المؤمن للمؤمن كالبنيان يَشُدُّ بعضُه بعضاً – وشبك بين أصابعه"

The connection between Muslims is like that of a strong building - one part strengthens another." The Prophet pbuh then showed this by interlocking the fingers of one hand with those of the other (that muslims should remain united and combined - thereby streghthening one another).

قال صلى الله عليه وسلم :

Bush, the shoe and the Iraqi song :)

"President Bush is in Baghdad today on a surprise farewell visit highlighting the security deal recently reached between the U.S. and Iraq. CNN Baghdad correspondent Michael Ware reports this afternoon that during a press conference with Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, an Iraqi man threw a shoe at Bush, but “it just sailed past his head” President Bush is said to have remarked that, “This was a size 10 shoe he threw at me you may want to know,” even as the man was heard screaming in the hallway.: Iraqi television journalist Muthathar al Zaidi and reports he threw both of his shoes at Bush just after he finished prepared remarks.

"The war is not over," Bush said, adding that "it is decisively on it's way to being won."

"This is the end!" shouted Muntadar al-Zeidi, a correspondent for Al-Baghdadia television. “This is a farewell kiss, you dog,” Zaidi shouted.

Bush ordered the nation into war against Saddam Hussein's Iraq while citing intelligence claiming the Mideast nation harbored weapons of mass destruction. The weapons were never found, the intelligence was discredited, Bush's credibility with U.S. voters plummeted and Saddam was captured and executed.

With his second shoe, which the president also managed to dodge, Mr Zaidi said: "This is for the widows and orphans and all those killed in Iraq."

Two other Iraqi journalists were briefly detained after one of them called Zaidi's actions "courageous."

Al-Zaidi is still in prison. I wonder what happened to their" democracy in the middle east", the lying hypocrites. Getting thrown with shoes is nothing compared to what he did. I'm only sorry that Muntadher Al-Zaidi missed him. Are they going to give him a taste of "Abu Gharaib"? Or may be accuse him with hiding bombs in his shoes or something?

I've read lots of reports on the same incident. What attracted me the most is when they say:" in the Arab culture –or in the Islamic culture- throwing shoes is a great insult", I just couldn't help wondering in what culture throwing shoes is a sign of love or affection??Do they have to bring shoe "sign" experts to analyze that? Eh, but then again, they are the same people who were expected to be greeted with flowers and candy!!

I think Al-Zaidi's shoes should be bronzed.

The Coach of the Iraqi football team has offered 100,000 dollars for the shoes but I think more offers will be on the way.
