Skip the 11 o'clock news, respect your mouth and 18 other stay-healthy musts

You've
heard it before: Eat a healthy diet, exercise and don't smoke, and
you'll add years to your life. In fact, one study found that more than
half of all deaths from chronic diseases among women could be avoided
by following these commonsense strategies. But there's more to good
health than just these basic tenets. "There are many surprisingly
simple things you can do to improve your health," says Michael Roizen,
MD, chief wellness officer at the Cleveland Clinic. "It's up to you to
make smart choices on a daily basis." Doctors give their best advice
for keeping you in the pink.

Learn How to Relax
You can't always control when stress
hits, but you can control how you handle it, says David L. Katz, MD,
director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center. The key is
to first acknowledge its presence. When you feel the anxiety
coming on, give yourself a brief time-out. Do some deep
breathing--inhale through your nose for five full counts, then exhale
through your mouth for five full counts--until you start to feel
calmer. To counteract chronic stress, like a demanding job, build in
ways to blow off steam. "Not everyone relaxes by doing yoga or
meditating-a brisk walk or smashing a tennis ball might be better,"
says Dr. Katz. "Just figure out what works for you."

Know Your Resting Heart Rate
It
could help your doctor identify if you're at an increased risk of
having a heart attack. In a study of nearly 130,000 postmenopausal
women with no history of heart disease,
researchers found that those whose hearts beat the fastest at rest were
26% more likely to have a coronary event--independent of other factors
like whether they smoked or exercised. To find your resting heart rate,
spend an extra minute in bed when you first wake up (hey, it's a good
excuse!) and feel your pulse either on your wrist or neck. Count for 30
seconds and multiply by 2; for best results, do it three days in a row
and take an average. If it's above 75, talk to your doc.

...And Your Waist Size
The
larger it is, the greater your risk of heart trouble, finds a recent
study from Harvard and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden of more than
80,000 women and men. Researchers blame abdominal fat, which is
associated with cardiovascular disease risk factors such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol and high triglycerides.
In the study, every 4-inch increase in women's waist size was
associated with a 15% higher risk for heart disease--even in people who
were at a healthy weight. "A waist size above 35 inches in a woman (and
over 40 in men) is a potential risk factor, not only for heart disease
but also for other conditions including diabetes,"
notes Nieca Goldberg, MD, clinical associate professor of medicine,
medical director of New York University's Women's Heart Program, and
author of Dr. Nieca Goldberg's Complete Guide to Women's Health.

Respect Your Mouth
Floss and brush daily and you'll be rewarded with more than just a bright smile. "Your oral health
has a major influence on your systemic health," says Dr. Roizen. "The
same bacteria that cause gum disease in your mouth can set off an
immune reaction that may lead to wrinkles, heart disease and even stroke."
Several studies have linked periodontal disease to an increased risk of
heart disease (some speculate that gum disease may cause chronic
inflammation, which can in turn cause swelling around the arteries).

Drink Tap Water
Most
bottled water isn't just expensive and bad for the environment. It also
typically doesn't contain fluoride, which can help prevent tooth decay.
Can't stand the taste of tap? Use a carbon filter, which helps remove
pesticide residue and other chemicals.

Skip the 11 O'clock News
The
economy, war, a rainy forecast: No wonder the nightly news can leave
you feeling unsettled, which can make it tough to fall asleep. And that
can spell trouble for your health. "Getting good sleep
is crucial to keeping your entire body running smoothly," says Dr.
Katz. One recent study found that people who got less than seven hours
of shut-eye are almost three times more likely to get sick after
exposure to a cold virus than those who slept eight hours or more. Other studies have associated poor sleep with everything from obesity
to high blood pressure and diabetes. If you can't doze off without a
little TV time, watch something funny--just make sure you turn it off
in time to get a solid seven to nine hours of rest.

Volunteer for a Cause You're Passionate About
You'll
do good not just for others, but for yourself, too. Numerous studies
have shown that volunteering has significant health benefits, including
reduced rates of depression
and greater life satisfaction. And you don't have to be Mother Teresa:
A little giving of your time and energy goes a long way. One study
showed that people who did just 40 hours of volunteer work yearly lived
longer. It's also a great way to stay connected to your community. Get
a group of friends together and help clean up a local park, visit a
nursing home or organize a fundraiser. Socializing has been associated
with lower risk of depression, Alzheimer's, and overall better mental and physical health.

Get Familiar with "C"
As in c-reactive protein,
a marker of inflammation (checked with a blood test) that experts think
may play a role in the formation of clots that block the flow of blood
to the heart. Researchers in the landmark JUPITER study of more than
17,000 women 60 and older and men 50 and older found that those who had
normal cholesterol levels but slightly elevated levels of c-reactive
protein reduced their risk of heart attack and stroke by taking a statin--meaning
that CRP levels may be worth keeping tabs on. However, keep in mind
that experts are still trying to figure out CRP's exact role, and
whether or not it directly causes heart disease or is a sign that it's
developing. "Men and women in this age group with normal cholesterol
should ask their doctors about CRP," says Dr. Goldberg.

...And "D"
"Mountains of research show the benefits of vitamin D," such as lowering the risk of osteoporosis,
"but many women don't know their levels," says Marjorie Jenkins, MD,
executive director of the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women's Health in
Amarillo, Texas. And 60% of American women are deficient, whether they
live in Boston or sunnier climes like San Diego. (Your body produces D
when it's exposed to sunlight.) Because D is fat-soluble, you can get
too much of it--so ask your doc to check your levels before you start
taking a supplement.

Treat Your Body as Well as You Treat Your Car
"Just
as your car needs regular checkups and oil changes to keep it running
in top form, you need to practice preventive medicine on a regular
basis," says Kimberly McMillin, MD, a physician at Baylor Medical
Center in Garland, Texas. That means getting an annual physical with a
Pap smear; clinical breast exam; mammogram (for women 40-plus, younger
if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer); and glucose,
cholesterol and blood pressure checks. For more individualized
screening recommendations on everything from hearing loss to heart
disease, check out the U.S. Preventive Service Task Force's recommendations.

Reapply Sunscreen-and Make Sure You're Using Enough
A
few dabs of daily moisturizer with sunscreen on your face offers about
as much protection as an umbrella in a hurricane. Even when we're
applying it to the rest of our bodies, most of us use only 25% to 50%
of the correct amount (about 1 ounce, or a full shot glass). Choose a
broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 that protects
against UVA and UVB rays. Put it on about 15 to 30 minutes before you
go outside, then reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating
heavily.

Don't Keep Bedroom Troubles to Yourself
Haven't
been in the mood lately? Tell your doc, and don't be embarrassed,
because low libido is often treatable. "Having a healthy sex life
figures into your overall well-being, both physically and emotionally,"
says Lisa Masterson, MD, an obstetrician and gynecologist in Santa
Monica, California, and a staff member at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Having sex once or twice a week has been linked to higher levels of the
immune-boosting antibody immunoglobulin,
and one Scottish study found that people who had sex regularly (at
least once every two weeks) responded better to stressful
situations--their blood pressure didn't go up too high-than those who
didn't. Even simple snuggle time can count: Another study found that
frequently hugging your partner can help reduce blood pressure and
heart rate.

Think of Your Home as Your Gym
Everyday
activities, from gardening to housework, can add up to substantial
exercise-and health benefits. In fact, you'll burn as many calories
doing basic household tasks like vacuuming and carrying groceries as
you would going for a brisk walk. And every little bit counts. "As long
as you're doing some form of activity for a total of 30 minutes a day,
you'll improve your health," says Dr. McMillin.

Know Your Family Health History
The
genes you inherited play a large role in your risk of disease, so
gathering the details of your family's medical history and sharing them
with your doctor can help her figure out which lifestyle habits and
screening tests are key to your good health, says Sandra Adamson
Fryhofer, MD, an internist and clinical associate professor of medicine
at Emory University in Atlanta. Take some time to map your family
tree--at least a couple of generations back--noting any significant
diseases among your siblings, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles,
great-aunts and greatuncles, at what age they got sick and how long
they lived with the condition. You can easily do this online at
FamilyHistory.HHS.gov.

Be Organized
Keep a
list of your allergies and medications (both prescription and OTC) in
your wallet in case of emergency. At home, start a health folder and
keep a record of the dates and results of your most recent medical
exams so you know when it's time to schedule new ones. Also keep notes
of when your prescriptions are up for renewal and whether you've had
any adverse reactions.

Get Your Flu Shot
Swine flu scares aside, an annual dose of the influenza vaccine
will go a long way toward keeping you healthy all year long. "Research
shows getting a flu shot decreases hospitalization from so many
conditions that can arise as a result of the flu, including asthma, pneumonia and even cardiovascular disease, by 25%," says Dr. Roizen.

Stretch It Out
A
few minutes of stretching a day can greatly improve your overall range
of motion, which not only makes everyday tasks like reaching for the
top shelf in the pantry easier but also reduces back or knee pain. "We
spend so much time today hunched over computers, on the phone or in our
cars that we forget to give our muscles a chance to lengthen and
relax," says Dr. Fryhofer. The perfect time to stretch? When your
muscles are already warm, like when you've finished doing some basic
household tasks (vacuuming, carrying laundry or scrubbing the kitchen).
Do some simple stretches for your hamstrings, glutes, quads, calves,
shoulders, chest and back. Go to WomansDay.com/Stretch for a few.

Don't Discount Hormone Therapy
If
you're early in menopause (in your 50s), Hormone Therapy (HT) may not
be the demon you think, says Dr. Fryhofer. "It's not for everyone, but
for the right person and the right reason, hormones may be the right
answer." In 2002, the Women's Health Initiative study reported that
there were more drawbacks to HT than benefits. Today, while some
doctors don't advise using HT long-term, there may be a role for using
it short-term to relieve uncomfortable symptoms and boost bone health.

Make Friends with Bacteria
Your
digestive system needs "good" bacteria to keep the "bad" kind at bay.
Some studies have shown that these positive bacteria (also known as
probiotics) can help lower the risk of conditions like irritable bowel syndrome
and vaginal yeast infections. But you may need more than just a few
spoonfuls of yogurt to get the benefits. "Supplements--especially the
live version, available in spore form--have a better chance of getting
into your gut," notes Dr. Roizen, who recommends brands like Align or
Sustenex.

Go Low-Tech-At Least Sometimes
The
constant buzz of your cell, PDA or other seemingly indispensable device
can be doing you more harm than good. "It's a disruption that can add
significant stress to your life," says Alice Domar, PhD, executive
director of the Domar Center for Mind/Body Health in Waltham,
Massachusetts, and author of Be Happy Without Being Perfect. If you
find yourself paying more attention to your phone than to your family,
or your heart speeds up whenever you see that flashing message light,
take a BlackBerry break for a few hours (or even days).

Special thanks to Yahoo Health! :D

Graviola tree--including the bark, leaves, roots, fruit and
fruit-seeds--have been used for centuries by medicine men and native
Indians in South America to treat heart disease, asthma, liver
problems and arthritis. Going on very little documented scientific
evidence, the company poured money and resources into testing the

company had one huge problem with the Graviola tree--it's completely

invested nearly seven years trying to synthesize two of the Graviola
tree's most powerful anti-cancer ingredients. If they could isolate
and produce man-made clones of what makes the Graviola so potent,
they'd be able to patent it and make their money back. Alas, they hit
a brick wall. The original simply could not be replicated. There was
no way the company could protect its profits--or even make back the
millions it poured into research.

As the dream of huge profits

The Most Memorable Moments From The MJ Memorial.

Buzz Log: The Most Memorable Moments From The Michael Jackson Memorial
Posted Tue Jul 7, 2009 2:06pm PDT by Michael Krumboltz in Stop The Presses!

Below are several of the biggest moments from Michael Jackson's memorial. Some are light-hearted, some are heart-breaking, but all are memorable.

Brooke Shields, a very good friend of Jackson's, shared some of her favorite memories. Ms. Shields choked up a bit at the end of her speech, giving a voice to many in the audience and at home who must have felt the same way.

The Reverend Al Sharpton credited Jackson with demolishing racial barriers. Sharpton also called on fans to not focus on the scars of Jackson's career, but to focus on the journey. To Jackson's kids he said: "There wasn't nothing strange about your daddy."

Magic Johnson's humorous story about how he was shocked to discover that a huge star like Michael Jackson enjoyed Kentucky Fried Chicken gave fans an insider's glimpse into an unknowable icon.

With all the star-power in the room, it was less expected that a 12-year-old from the U.K. would make a huge impression at the memorial, but Shaheen Jafargholi's performance of the Jackson 5's "Who's Loving You" inspired a raucous round of applause.

Jennifer Hudson is no stranger to tragedy. Perhaps that's why her performance of "Will You Be There" came across as one of the memorial's most special moments.

Michael's brother Jermaine Jackson performed MJ's favorite song: "Smile." The lyrics were especially poignant: "Smile, what's the use of crying/You'll find that life is still worthwhile/If you just smile."

Perhaps the most touching moment came at the very end of the memorial when Michael's daughter, Paris, expressed her love for her late father.

LOS ANGELES (AFP) –
A video released Thursday showed Michael Jackson vigorously practicing a song-and-dance routine days before his death, supporting accounts he had been in good health.

In footage obtained by AFP, the pop legend performed at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on June 23, two days before he died, as he prepared for a 50-date set in London starting in July.

Jackson, while thin, is seen dancing with energy in a tightly
choreographed sequence with a group of performers. Jackson sings on a
headset and at one point pushes back his jacket to reveal his red shirt
underneath.

In the footage, Jackson switches sharply in styles in a medley of some
of his hits. The video starts with Jackson dancing wildly in front of a
rock 'n' roll guitarist before a pause for dramatic effect.

Jackson then shifts to a snippet of "Billie Jean," one of his greatest hits, before singing, "They Don't Care About Us," one of his most controversial tracks in which he brought in a hip-hop influence.

The set ends with a sample of a car horn. The stage then fades to black as an outside voice instructs, "Hold for applause."

Associates of Jackson have described the 50-year-old pop star as being
in good form, including at another rehearsal just hours before his
death.

Jackson collapsed and died on June 25 at his rented Los Angeles
mansion. Speculation has focused on whether Jackson was taking
painkillers or other medication.

Jackson's voice coach Dorian Holley said Jackson was in an upbeat mood
in the days before his death, joking around with his wardrobe and
makeup staff.

"My friends call and ask, 'Was Michael sick? Was he weak? Was he ill?' It's the absolute opposite of that," Holley told CNN.

"He was very energetic, he was happy. He was even more playful than he normally was at rehearsal," he said.

Holley said Jackson, 50, did not show his age.

"I'm sure that he was in pain after some rehearsals. But I got to tell
you something -- the guys and girls dancing with him were all in their
20s," he said.

"When Michael was on stage with them, there was only one person that you could watch and that was Michael Jackson," he said.

A similar account came from Kevin Mazur, who was attending the rehearsal sessions as a photographer.

"He was like an expectant father pacing up and down the stage," Mazur told Britain's Sun tabloid.

"He was just so focused. Between songs, he burst into laughter and
joked around with his dancers and the director. I have never seen him
so happy," Mazur said.

Jackson had planned a series of concerts at London's O2 Arena starting
on July 13, part of a comeback for the King of Pop whose personal and
financial life had sharply deteriorated in the past decade.

Concert promoters AEG Live, who released the video, are offering full ticket refunds for the concerts.

British media reports said about 50 million pounds (59 million euros, 83 million dollars) has been spent on 750,000 tickets.

Special thanks to Yahoo News. :)

LOS ANGELES – Michael Jackson, the sensationally gifted child star who rose to become the "King of Pop"
and the biggest celebrity in the world only to fall from his throne in
a freakish series of scandals, died Thursday. He was 50. Jackson died
at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. Ed Winter, the assistant chief coroner for Los Angeles County, confirmed his office had been notified of the death and would handle the investigation.

The circumstances of Jackson's death were not immediately clear. Jackson was not breathing when Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to a call at his Los Angeles home about 12:30 p.m., Capt. Steve Ruda told the Los Angeles Times. The paramedics performed CPR and took him to the hospital, Ruda told the newspaper.

Jackson's
death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical
decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music's premier
all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered
the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage.

His 1982 album "Thriller" — which included the blockbuster hits "Beat It," "Billie Jean" and "Thriller" — is the best-selling album of all time, with an estimated 50 million copies sold worldwide.

The public first knew him in the late 1960s, when as a boy he was the precocious, spinning lead singer of the Jackson 5, the music group he formed with his four older brothers. Among their No. 1 hits were "I Want You Back," "ABC," and "I'll Be There."

He was perhaps the most exciting performer of his generation, known for his feverish, crotch-grabbing dance moves
and his high-pitched voice punctuated with squeals and titters. His
single sequined glove, tight, military-style jacket and aviator
sunglasses were trademarks second only to his ever-changing, surgically
altered appearance.

"For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a young age, I just don't have the words," said Quincy Jones,
who produced "Thriller." "He was the consummate entertainer and his
contributions and legacy will be felt upon the world forever. I've lost
my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him."

Jackson ranked alongside Elvis Presley and the Beatles
as the biggest pop sensations of all time. He united two of music's
biggest names when he was briefly married to Presley's daughter, Lisa
Marie, and Jackson's death immediately evoked that of Presley himself,
who died at age 42 in 1977.

As years went by,
Jackson became an increasingly freakish figure — a middle-aged
man-child weirdly out of touch with grown-up life. His skin became
lighter, his nose narrower, and he spoke in a breathy, girlish voice.
He surrounded himself with children at his Neverland ranch, often wore a germ mask while traveling and kept a pet chimpanzee named Bubbles as one of his closest companions.

"It
seemed to me that his internal essence was at war with the norms of the
world. It's as if he was trying to defy gravity," said Michael Levine,
a Hollywood publicist who represented Jackson in the early 1990s. He
called Jackson a "disciple of P.T. Barnum" and said the star appeared
fragile at the time but was "much more cunning and shrewd about the
industry than anyone knew."

Jackson caused a furor in 2002 when he playfully dangled his infant son, Prince Michael II, over a hotel balcony in Berlin while a throng of fans watched from below.

In
2005, he was cleared of charges he molested a 13-year-old cancer
survivor at Neverland in 2003. He had been accused of plying the boy
with alcohol and groping him, and of engaging in strange and
inappropriate behavior with other children.

The
case followed years of rumors about Jackson and young boys. In a TV
documentary, he had acknowledged sharing his bed with children, a
practice he described as sweet and not at all sexual.

Despite
the acquittal, the lurid allegations that came out in court took a
fearsome toll on his career and image, and he fell into serious
financial trouble.

Jackson was preparing for
what was to be his greatest comeback: He was scheduled for an
unprecedented 50 shows at a London arena, with the first set for July
13. He was in rehearsals in Los Angeles for the concert, an extravaganza that was to capture the classic Jackson magic: showstopping dance moves, elaborate staging and throbbing dance beats.

Singer Dionne Warwick
said: "Michael was a friend and undoubtedly one of the world's greatest
entertainers that I fortunately had the pleasure of working with. ...
We have lost an icon in our industry."

Hundreds of people gathered outside the hospital as word of his death spread. The emergency entrance at the UCLA Medical Center, which is near Jackson's rented home, was roped off with police tape.

after the news was announced. Immediately many riders reached for their
cell phones.

So many people wanted to verify the early reports of Jackson's death that the computers running Google's

when a screen flashed that Jackson had died, and people began relaying
the news to friends by cell phone.

"No joke. King of Pop is no more. Wow," Michael Harris, 36, of New York City,

Wish Fulfillment?No.But Dreams(& sleep)Hv meani..

Wish Fulfillment? No. But Dreams (and Sleep) Have Meaning

Dreams may not be the secret window into the frustrated desires of the unconscious that Sigmund Freud first posited in 1899, but growing evidence suggests that dreams - and, more so, sleep - are powerfully connected to the processing of human emotions.
According to new research presented last week at the annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies in Seattle, adequate sleep may underpin our ability to understand complex emotions properly in waking life. "Sleep essentially is resetting the magnetic north of your emotional compass," says Matthew Walker, director of the Sleep and Neuroimaging Lab(See the top 10 scientific discoveries of 2008.) at the University of California, Berkeley.

A recent study by Walker and his colleagues examined how rest - specifically, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep - influences our ability to read emotions in other people's faces. In the small analysis of 36 adults, volunteers were asked to interpret the facial expressions of people in photographs, following either a 60- or 90-minute nap during the day or with no nap. Participants who had reached REM sleep (when dreaming most frequently occurs) during their nap were better able to identify expressions of positive emotions like happiness in other people, compared with participants who did not achieve REM sleep or did not nap at all. Those volunteers were more sensitive to negative expressions, including anger and fear.

Past research by Walker and colleagues at Harvard Medical School, which was published in the journal Current Biology, found that in people who were sleep deprived, activity in the prefrontal lobe - a region of the brain involved in controlling emotion - was significantly diminished. He suggests that a similar response may be occurring in the nap-deprived volunteers, albeit to a lesser extent, and that it may have its roots in evolution. "If you're walking through the jungle and you're tired, it might benefit you more to be hypersensitive to negative things," he says. The idea is that with little mental energy to spare, you're emotionally more attuned to things that are likely to be the most threatening in the immediate moment. Inversely, when you're well rested, you may be more sensitive to positive emotions, which could benefit long-term survival, he suggests: "If it's getting food, if it's getting some kind of reward, finding a wife - those things are pretty good to pick up on."

Our daily existence is largely influenced by our ability "to understand our societal interactions, to understand someone else's emotional state of mind, to understand the expression on their face," says Ninad Gujar, a senior research scientist at Walker's lab and lead author of the study, which was recently submitted for publication. "These are the most fundamental processes guiding our personal and professional lives."

REM sleep appears to not only improve our ability to identify positive emotions in others; it may also round out the sharp angles of our own emotional experiences. Walker suggests that one function of REM sleep - dreaming, in particular - is to allow the brain to sift through that day's events, process any negative emotion attached to them, then strip it away from the memories. He likens the process to applying a "nocturnal soothing balm." REM sleep, he says, "tries to ameliorate the sharp emotional chips and dents that life gives you along the way." (See the top 10 medical breakthroughs of 2008.)
"It's not that you've forgotten. You haven't," he says. "It's a memory of an emotional episode, but it's no longer emotional itself."

That palliative safety-valve quality of sleep may be hampered when we fail to reach REM sleep or when REM sleep is disrupted, Walker says. "If you don't let go of the emotion, what results is a constant state of anxiety," he says.

The theory is consistent with new research conducted by Rebecca Bernert, a doctoral candidate in clinical psychology at Florida State University who specializes in the relationship between sleep and suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and who also presented her work at the sleep conference this week.
In her study of 82 men and women between the ages of 18 and 66 who were admitted into a mental-health hospital for emergency psychiatric evaluation, Bernert discovered that the presence of severe and frequent nightmares or insomnia was a strong predictor of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. More than half of the study participants had attempted suicide at least once in the past, and the 17% of the study group who had made an attempt within the previous month had dramatically higher scores in nightmare frequency and intensity than the rest. Bernert found that the relationship between nightmares or insomnia and suicide persisted, even when researchers controlled for other factors like depression.

Past studies have also established a link between chronic sleep disruption and suicide. Sleep complaints, which include nightmares, insomnia and other sleep disturbances, are listed in the current Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's inventory of suicide-prevention warning signs. Yet what distinguishes Bernert's research is that when nightmares and insomnia were evaluated separately, nightmares were independently predictive of suicidal behavior. "It may be that nightmares present a unique risk for suicidal symptoms, which may have to do with the way we process emotion within dreams," Bernert says.

If that's the case, it may help explain the recurring nightmares that characterize psychiatric conditions like posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Walker says. "The brain has not stripped away the emotional rind from that experience memory," he says, so "the next night, the brain offers this up, and it fails again, and it starts to sound like a broken record ... What you hear [PTSD] patients describing is, 'I can't get over the event.' "

At the biological level, Walker explains, the "emotional rind" translates to sympathetic nervous-system activity during sleep: faster heart rate and the release of stress chemicals. Understanding why nightmares recur and how REM sleep facilitates emotional processing - or hinders it, when nightmares take place and perpetuate the physical stress symptoms - may eventually provide clues to effective treatments of painful mental disorders. Perhaps, even, by simply addressing sleeping habits, doctors could potentially interrupt the emotional cycle that can lead to suicide. "There is an opportunity for prevention," Bernert says.

The new findings highlight what researchers are increasingly recognizing as a two-way relationship between psychiatric disorders and disrupted sleep. "Modern medicine and psychiatry have consistently thought that psychological disorders seem to have co-occuring sleep problems and that it's the disorder perpetuating the sleep problems," says Walker. "Is it possible that, in fact, it's the sleep disruption contributing to the psychiatric disorder?"

Dating 101: Guys Who Don't Get the 2nd Date

a dating coach and matchmaker, I've spent the past 10 years conducting
some unconventional dating research using a business concept called
"Exit Interviews." While earning my MBA degree at Harvard Business
School, I learned how candid exit interviews from an employee leaving
his company can reveal crucial feedback, empowering managers to get
something right next time with future clients and employees. So I
thought: why not try this tactic in the dating
world?
The Dating Poll
In
one poll, I asked over 100 single women to
confess the real reasons they didn't accept a second date with a man.
My goal was to help men discover simple mistakes or misperceptions
which they could adjust next time with someone new. The women I
interviewed came from 23 states and 6 countries, with ages ranging from
21 to 68. Five top reasons emerged strong and consistent, but what was
the number-one turnoff? Did it have something to do with the
shortcomings of the bad boys, men afraid of commitment, or guys who
were too short, bald, potbellied, or unemployed? Not at all. Here,
single women define the men they dated who don't make it for a second
round of courtship.
The Puppy Dog
Betsy,
a 50-year-old lawyer in Seattle, mused about a guy she dated who
reminded her of that "Sex and the City" episode when Carrie was
dating Aidan and complained about how he was too available: He didn't
do the ever-seductive withholding dance or make her stomach flip. Betsy
admitted, "The early stage of dating is just one big game, whether we
like it or not. It's a cat and mouse game; puppy dogs don't
win."
The Incessant Flatterer
Emily,
a 39-year-old writer from Boston, said about one man, "Eagerness
can be flattering, but this felt a little desperate... it became
annoying. Also, because it was a first date, [I think] it had more to
do with a fantasy about me, than me." Hillary, a 35-year-old magazine
editor from New York, NY, remarked, "I went out with him in the first
place because he was so complimentary to me. I thought I should give
him a chance. Normally I like a man who doesn't play games, but the
flattery really became overkill." Karen, a 28-year-old health care
consultant in Madison, WI, sighed, "He looked like a sad puppy when I
said goodnight."
The Edgeless Man
Women
complained in droves about single men who
reminded them of puppies. These guys followed them around and were too
eager to please. Men who were "too nice" often appeared desperate or
weak. They didn't have an "edge." And their "gushing" early emails with
excessive flattery were a turnoff.
The Over-Gusher
Liz,
a 41-year-old language translator from Sherman Oaks, CA, told me about
the guy who sent such effusive emails after they met that she "was
disappointed to receive them." She said, "I wanted the polite, even
enthusiastic thank-you along with a compliment or two, but not the
over-gush. I guess I wanted him to maintain a little mystery." Jenna, a
33-year-old graphic designer in Miami, FL, commented: "He was too nice,
too transparent... he didn't intrigue me."
The Sweetie
Emma,
a 25-year-old advertising associate in London, described a guy
she could have "walked all over." And Shannon, a 38-year-old accountant
from Cincinnati, remembered declining a third date with a too-nice
guy who came to her office after she got promoted. He spent hours
organizing her files and brought her an expensive "congratulations"
plant. She said, "He was so good on paper, and I guess I'd call him
'sweet,' but he didn't have an edge."
Do Nice Guys Finish Last?

As
these confessions poured in, I worried whether the old adage "Nice guys
finish last" could actually be true. I hoped not, because I personally
love "nice guys" (I even married one! And after 16 happy years, let me
offer this endorsement: nice guys are the only ones who stand the test
of time). But as I spoke to women in more detail, they clarified what
they really meant, and I felt reassured. It's not that women don't want
a "nice guy" (they absolutely do when they are in a marriage-minded
mode!), but rather guys should simply monitor the quantity of their
effusive compliments and sweet gestures. Like most things in life, a
little bit of a good thing goes a long way, but too much is
overwhelming and usually a turnoff.

Thanks to Yahoo PERSONALS. ^^

 If
you want to make the right decisions in confusing times—Time to
refinance? Explore a different career? Root for the singing spinster or
the 12-year-old?—you need to pay special attention to what you eat.
That’s right: Your grocery list can help with your to-do list. That’s
because the right foods are a kind of clean-burning fuel for your
body’s biggest energy hog: Your brain. A study in the Journal of
Physiology makes the point that, though your brain represents only 2
percent of your body weight, it makes 20 percent of the energy demands
on your resting metabolism.

On our new Eat This, Not That! Web site,
we rounded up the best foods to munch on when you need a mental
boost—and found studies that show, in fact, that you can be up to 200
percent more productive if you make the right eating choices. Stock up
on these items to halt mental decline, jog your memory, sharpen your
senses, improve your performance, activate your feel-good hormones, and
protect your quick-witted sharpness, whether you’re 15, 40—or not
admitting to any age whatsoever!

FOR SHORT-TERM MEMORY
Drink This!: COFFEE

Fresh-brewed
joe is the ultimate brain fuel. Caffeine has been shown to retard the
aging process and enhance short-term memory performance. In one study,
British researchers found that just one cup of coffee helps improve
attention and problem-solving skills.

Not That!: ENERGY DRINKS/TOO MUCH COFFEE

Ever
heard of the concept “too much of a good thing”? If you OD on
caffeine—too many cups, a jolt of caf from the late afternoon onward, a
Red Bull cocktail—it can mess with your shuteye schedule. Sleep is
reboot time for your mental computer, and you don’t want to mess with
it.

FOR LONG-TERM MEMORY
Eat This!: BLUEBERRIES

Antioxidants
in blueberries help protect the brain from free-radical damage and cut
your risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. They can also
improve cognitive processing (translation: thinking). Wild blueberries,
if you can find them, have even more brain-boosting antioxidants than
the cultivated variety, so book that vacation in Maine now. The berries
will ripen in July.

Not That!: THE UNRIPE AND UNREADY

Here’s
a cool tip: if your favorite berries are out of season, buy them
frozen. The freezer locks in peak flavor and nutrients, so the berries’
antioxidant capacity is maxed out. Those pale, tough, and expensive
off-season berries usually ripen on a truck, rather than on the bush,
so they’re nutritional imposters compared to the real thing.

For more smart shopping tips, point your grocery cart to THIS story and learn how to pick the most delicious and nutritious while controlling your waistline!

TO THINK FASTER
Eat This!: SALMON OR MACKEREL

If
the Internal Revenue Service picks you for some up-close-and-personal
auditing, you’ll want to be on your toes when they vet your deductions
list. So put salmon or mackerel on the grocery list. The omega-3 fatty
acids found in fatty fishes are a primary building block of brain
tissue, so they’ll amp up your thinking power. Salmon is also rich in
niacin, which can help ward off Alzheimer’s disease and slow the rate
of cognitive decline.

Not That!: FULL-FAT ICE CREAM

Not
all fats are created equal: Beware foods high in saturated fats, which
can clog blood vessels and prevent the flow of nutrients and blood to
the brain. Ice cream is not a brain-health food.

TO ENERGIZE:
Eat This!: HIGH-PROTEIN SALAD WITH VINAIGRETTE

The
oil in the dressing will help slow down digestion of protein and carbs
in the salad, stabilizing blood-sugar levels and keeping energy levels
high. Build your salad on a bed of romaine and spinach for an added
boost in riboflavin, and add chicken and a hard-boiled egg for more
energizing protein.

For other tips on how to build the perfect salad, check out the Eat This, Not That! ultimate salad selector.

Not That!: PANCAKES OR BAGELS

MIT
researchers analyzed blood samples from a group of people who had eaten
either a high-protein or a high-carbohydrate breakfast. Two hours after
eating, the carb eaters had tryptophan levels four times higher than
those of the people who had eaten protein. The tryptophan in turkey is
one of the reasons you crawl off for an afternoon nap after
Thanksgiving dinner. So watch what you gobble.

TO CALM DOWN
Eat This!: LOW-FAT YOGURT OR MIXED NUTS

Scientists
in Slovakia gave people 3 grams each of two amino acids—lysine and
arginine—or a placebo, and asked them to deliver a speech. Blood
measurements of stress hormones revealed that the amino acid-fortified
guys were half as anxious during and after the speech as those who took
the placebo. Yogurt is one of the best food sources of lysine; nuts
pack loads of arginine.

Not That!: SODA

A study from the
American Journal of Public Health found that people who drink 2½ cans
of soda daily are three times more likely to be depressed and anxious,
compared with those who drink fewer. So Mountain Dew is a Mental Don’t.

TO CONCENTRATE
Eat This!: PEPPERMINT TEA

The
scent of peppermint helps you focus and boosts performance, according
to researchers. Need to reach Chicago before nightfall, and you’re
stuck in traffic around Cleveland? One study found that peppermint
makes drivers more alert and less anxious.

Not That!: CANDY

Sugary
foods incite sudden surges of glucose that, in the long term, cause
sugar highs and lows, leading to a fuzzy state of mind. So you’ll need
to avoid all the attention-busting sugar bombs on this list of the 20 most sugar-packed foods in America.

FOR GOOD MOODS AND GRINS
Eat This! ARUGULA OR SPINACH SALAD

Leafy
greens—arugula, chard, spinach—are rich sources of B vitamins, which
are key components on the assembly line that manufactures feel-good
hormones such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. According to
a study published in the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing, a lack of B6
can cause nervousness, irritability, and even depression.

Not That!: WHITE CHOCOLATE

White
chocolate isn’t chocolate at all, since it contains no cocoa solids. So
it won’t stimulate the euphoria-inducing mood boosters like serotonin,
as real chocolate does. Grab the real thing, the darker the better.
More cacao means more happy chemicals and less sugar, which will
eventually pull you down.

FOR SHARPER SENSES
Eat This!: 1 TBSP OF GROUND FLAXSEED DAILY

Flax
is the best source of alphalinoleic, or ALA—a healthy fat that improves
the workings of the cerebral cortex, the area of the brain that
processes sensory information, including that of pleasure. To meet your
quota, sprinkle it on salads or mix it into a smoothie or shake.

Not That!: ALCOHOL

This
one’s obvious, but worth mentioning anyway. A drink or two can increase
arousal signals, but more than that will actually depress your nervous
system. This makes you sloppy, not sharp.

Want more of all of the best and worst foods in America? Click here for the complete list of drinks, snacks, drive-thru foods, burgers, salads and everything else under the sun!
