Choosing your wedding music is not an easy task.  Many couples will immediately choose wedding songs that appeal to them, but then realize that not all of their guests will share the same appreciation!

If you are hiring a DJ and disco for your wedding entertainment then they should be able to guide to you as to a suitable play list for your wedding.  However there are moments throughout your reception where a personal choice of wedding song is required, these include your cocktail hour, cake cutting ceremony and that all important first dance.

Your choice of music should be suited to the style of your wedding and to the moment of your reception when you will play it.  Many couples prefer to choose instrumental music for the early reception, choosing gentle, melodic background music during the cocktail hour and meal, and then perhaps romantic songs for the cake cutting and first dance.  If you do choose music with lyrics make sure they are suitable for your wedding, some seemingly romantic songs may reveal some rather surprising lyrics when you take a closer look (or listen).

For the cocktail hour I think the requirement should be for something unobtrusive but bubbly to reflect the joy of the occasion and with a bit of depth and class. Definitely not lift or supermarket music, however! My first choice would be The Swingle Singers. They have recorded a huge range of stuff over the years including Beatles songs, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Clair de Lune and lots of other tracks/albums. For something not quite as bouncy, consider anything by Debussy (except perhaps the Engulfed Cathedral): try Clair de Lune (again, except the original version), The Girl with the Flaxen Hair and Prelude: The Afternoon of a Fawn. Also listen to selected tracks from Jacques Loussier such as Ravel’s Bolero. If you are after something more raucous, then listen to the Charlie Daniels Band especially Orange Blossom Special.

After your wedding breakfast is over then the choice of wedding music automatically gets a bit more personal. Live music may well be on the agenda or a disco, and as the bride and groom, you will no doubt have your own favorites ranging from jazz and disco to romantic love songs and melodic melodies.

Your choice of wedding music shouldn’t be rushed into, so take your time to consider many different songs from across many genre’s and artists until you have a list of music that you feel is best suited to your wedding and to your own personal tastes.  Your goal should be to make sure that everyone has a good time so by including a little bit of something for everyone, be they young or old, should hopefully have toes tapping all around the reception!
