Farin Urlaub a.k.a. Jan Max-Ulrich Vetter was born on October 27, 1963 in Berlin. Until he was seven he lived in Berlin/Mohabit together with his mother and then in Berlin/Frohnau. He has a younger sister called Julia. At the age of 9 he decided to take guitar lessons. This is how his musician career actually started. At age 16 he travelled to London where he dyed his hair and came back from as a punk.


In 1981 Urlaub got to know Dirk Felsenheimer (later Bela B.) in the „Ballhaus Spandau“ in Berlin and joined his band Soilent Grün because the guitar of the former guitarist was stolen. After Soilent Grün split in 1982, Urlaub founded „Die Ärzte“ with Bela B. and Sahnie. In course of their first record contract he had to choose a stage name and he ended up with his favourite hobby, travelling: the flowery phrase „Fahr in Urlaub“ (English: „Go on vacation“) he simply put together to „Farin Urlaub“.


Die Ärzte

In 1988, on the top the past band history of „Die Ärzte“, he suggested to split up the band, which really split that same year. One year later Urlaub founded the Band „King Køng“. Besides him there was drummer Uwe Hoffmann, the producer of „Die Ärzte“. Since Urlaub needed more space to the time of „Die Ärzte“, he called himself „Jan“ again, his real name, as long as „ King Køng“ existed. Because of the missing success the band isn’t active anymore. Farin himself annouced it disbanded in 1999. Since 1993 he again plays with „Die Ärzte“, who have been reunited on Urlaub’s idea.



Because he hasn’t trusted the teen magazine „BRAVO“ on their first interview, he claimed that his civil surname would have been „Vetter-Marciniak“ just to see, who knew him and who just pretended. At first, when receiving fan mail, he usually threw away those letters, which were adressed to „Vetter-Marciniak“. Even today „Vetter-Marciniak“ is being named as his real name in various magazines. In 1998 „Die Ärzte“ decided to stop working together with „BRAVO“, because they kept on asking for more and more private stories of the band. That made the magazine start a smear campaign against Farin. In that it claimed that he rammed the car of a journalist of „BRAVO“, beat down fans and generally acted according to the motto: „to make the enemy unable to fight“. During this time Urlaub reacted with opposite statements on the „Ärzte“-homepage. Even though on account of that the responsible editors of „BRAVO“ were fired, „Die Ärzte“ still do not work together with the „BRAVO“.


In 2001 he started his solo career and produced his studio LPs „Endlich Urlaub!“ (2001), „Am Ende der Sonne“ (2005), as well as „Die Wahrheit übers Lügen“ (2008). Besides that in 2006 the „Livealbum of Death“, which was recorded during the "Sonnenblumen Of Death"-Tour 2005, was published. While Urlaub produced „Endlich Urlaub!“ and „Am Ende der Sonne“ mostly on his own, for the recording of „Die Wahrheit übers Lügen“ he worked together with his „Farin Urlaub Racing Team“, which used to play with him only on concerts and such.
